What TPO is — and how it works.
TPO (thermoplastic polyolefin) is a single-ply membrane, mechanically fastened or fully adhered over insulation, with seams fused by hot-air welding into a monolithic sheet. Done right, the weld is stronger than the membrane itself.
Its white reflective surface cuts summer cooling load — a real line item in Texas and an increasing one in Midwest summers. Formulations have improved substantially over the past two decades, but membrane thickness and weld quality still separate a 15-year roof from a 30-year one.

Weld quality varies
The system is only as good as its welder. Probe testing on seams is part of every Lionstar TPO assessment.
Heat aging
Sustained high heat load — reflected wall heat, dark adjacent surfaces — accelerates aging locally.
Grease and exhaust
Kitchen exhaust degrades TPO; restaurants need sacrificial protection or a different membrane at discharge zones.
Punctures
Trades traffic and dropped tools are the top cause of TPO leaks; walkway pads pay for themselves.
TPO over absorbent insulation is one of the best infrared candidates there is — which means on this system, we can prove exactly what’s wet.

How long does a TPO roof last?
Realistically 15–30 years depending on membrane thickness, installation quality, and maintenance. The spread is that wide because weld quality and detail work matter more than the brand on the roll. A scan and seam probe tells you where yours actually sits.
Is TPO good for Minnesota and Texas climates?
Yes, with different stress profiles: freeze-thaw works the details in Minnesota, while sustained heat load works the membrane in Texas. The white surface earns its keep in both — and our maintenance schedule targets each climate’s failure points.
My TPO roof is leaking. Does it need replacement?
Usually not. Most TPO leaks are a detail or a seam, not the field — and if the insulation below is still dry, a welded repair restores the system. A moisture survey settles whether you’re looking at a repair, a partial, or a real replacement.
